“My birth story is one of humble and happy transformation. My initial approach to pregnancy and birth was with the assumption that everything was already figured out, that I would just follow along medical guidance and everything would go as best it could.

I tossed out this whole approach, oddly alienating in retrospect, when Jen introduced me to resources that explored birth more deeply as a cultural experience. Books she introduced me to presented in depth historical and anthropological views, which helped me to understand the development of and decision making surrounding medical interventions and women’s experiences.

The result, over the course of working with Jen, was that I steadily moved into a more attuned state, embracing my experience as a state of health, letting go of fear, and rejecting the interpretation of pregnancy, labor and birth as pathological conditions that require intervention.

For the actual birth, my little babe came a week before due, and I was far from “ready”, yet found myself in a peaceful place of accepted readiness. I was prepared to be unprepared. In fact, during the earlier process of making a birth plan, I had put in a lot of thought about various details but decided on the plan of “no plan”. Looking back, I think this was an important process that allowed me to pre-process the uncertainty of what was to come.

My contractions started early in the morning as “hmm, what’s this?” Then within hours it became “oh, hello!”, then “bloody hell!” My husband called Jen, and she was truly our doula, very aware of how impactful relationships and communication are, especially on the day of birth! Jen is amazingly strong and was equipped to absorb and guide the fluctuating emotions of both of us. For my husband, she was a touchstone, an interpreter and guide through a brand new experience.

For me, I felt Jen was my representative, my connection to the world as I went deeper and deeper into an internal space. With her there, I didn’t have to listen to anyone or take instruction or even be aware of my surroundings. She was there so I didn’t have to be. This allowed me to just follow my body and embrace this whole new experience.

As a woman giving birth, no one can take your place. But Jen was my witness, my believer, and somehow without words or touch she was me when I couldn’t be, and I in turn was her with her strength and her determination.”

“When I found out I was pregnant I knew I had to ask Jen to be my doula. After seeing the enlightened content she was posting on Facebook I reached out to her. This being my first pregnancy I was excited and also unknowing in what would transpire.

From the beginning I felt at ease with Jen. I knew that she would best help support us with our birth plan. Jen provided not only amazing pain management during the birth but also the emotional support I needed. I had moments of doubt and she was there to remind me of my power. She was also a great support to my birth partner. Unfortunately, my baby had to be taken right away for suction and Jen reassured me that all was well with baby. She was also instrumental in our debrief after the birth and processing where the birth didn’t go the way we planned.

I didn’t learn what a postpartum doula was until after I had my first child. I wish I had known about the profession earlier, as the emotional, physical and educational support provided by a postpartum doula would have really helped with the transition to motherhood. After our second child was born, we were fortunate to have Jen as our postpartum doula. Jen helped me and my family so much as we adjusted from a family of three to four. Jen provided an extra set of very capable hands to help with our new baby and allowed us to offload some of the housework and cooking. Having Jen’s help gave me more time to bond with the new baby or time to myself to shower or rest. Thanks to Jen, I was able to spend quality 1:1 time with my oldest child when they got back from school, which helped ease their transition to a big sibling. Jen took our dog on walks and was so loving toward our dog. In addition to providing physical support, Jen also provided much needed emotional and educational support during the postpartum period.

Jen was always punctual and is a very caring, trustworthy person with a strong work ethic. She is passionate about her profession and has a calming, positive energy that she brought into our home. She is not judgmental and is respectful and accommodating of your beliefs. She has a wealth of knowledge related to pregnancy, birth, managing the postpartum period, infants, older children, nutrition and much more that is invaluable.

I highly recommend Jen as a postpartum doula. It was such a great decision for us and really helped smooth our transition to a family of four.

I am writing with belated thanks for the fantastic session we had together about a month ago. It was a terrific experience working with you and I recalled on the images we surfaced during my labor to help me through the birth experience I wanted: medication free! I began feeling surges at 4:45am on November 16th. I stayed at home that day listening to my hypnobirthing affirmations and taking it easy. My husband came home from work at 12 with lunch for me. By 2pm I was surging at the 5-1-1 rate so we decided to drive to the hospital where my monatrice met us. There they checked my dilation and I was 4cm so they admitted me once a room was ready. I spent the time peacefully listening to calming music and affirmations. Although I had an IV for Group B, I was able to freely move and took advantage of that. I spent most of early labor squatting rocking and relaxing in the shower. Once I moved into active labor, the doctor informed my husband that the baby had rid herself of meconium in the womb so they began monitoring her more actively. I was no longer able to go into the shower but my husband and montarice did not voice concern to me. This allowed me to stay in a peaceful zone and focus on the surges. I talked to the baby often as I surged and conjured the image we ended our session with- of my husband, daughter and I “at home” in New Zealand. I also used imagery from the hypnobirthing class. 10 hours into my time at the hospital and it was time to breathe the baby down. I did this for 45 mins before she joined us in the world. During this time, I really harkened on the images we used. There was a complication: shoulder dysplasia which stressed my little one. As her heart rate dropped my doctor expressed concern and asked me to push off-surge. My husband coached me vigorously and we were able to bring her to us before a vacuum was needed. Thank goodness! When she was born she let us know how scared she was. After crying for a few minutes, she fed and rested. We named her Noa — a feminist figure from Torah, which translates to “movement” in Hebrew. At birth Noa measured 19″ and weighed 7lbs 3 oz. We’ve been home now for a little over a week and are all very happy and healthy. She’s very alert , which is wonderful and feeding well. In fact at 8 days she already passed her birth weight. My husband, Noa and I are grateful for you!

I had a wonderful birthing experience. Although I didn’t have the vaginal birth that I was hoping for, I did have an uneventful planned C-section on November 16. At that time my daughter, Tamra, was still breech and it seemed like the safest route to take for everyone involved. She was born healthy and I felt great throughout the birth and healing process. Your hypnosis made me feel more at ease with the process and as a result, I didn’t feel the need for any fear or discomfort. Thank you again for your help!

I hired Jen to be a postpartum doula and it was the best decision I could have made for myself and my family! Most of the postpartum doulas I interviewed specialized exclusively in baby care, Jen was the only one who also had expertise in caring for a postpartum mom – I can’t emphasize enough what a difference that made. She was literally a life saver for us in the first few weeks after coming home from the hospital. She was such a supportive, calm, loving presence and I would count down the hours until she came back. She cooked delicious meals, supported me as I navigated how best to feed my baby, helped me recover physically and mentally, and was a wonderful caretaker to my son when all I needed was some time to myself.
